Symphony Orchestra

orchestra_2014For over 140 years, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra has been keeping up the rhythm of the musical life at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest a place where modernity is welcomed by tradition. Equally spectacular and dynamic, the generous space there has favoured encounters with classical and contemporary music by life-long attendees there and younger music lovers alike.
Revered names such as those of Eduard Wachmann, George Enescu, George Georgescu, Constantin Silvestri, Mihai Brediceanu, Mircea Cristescu and Cristian Mandeal prove that the Philharmonic Orchestra has always had at its head master conductors who knew how to keep a high standard for the music in Romania.

Virtually all the great composers and soloists of the glorious interwar years—Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel, Arthur Rubinstein, Richard Strauss, Herbert von Karajan and Pablo Casals—made an appearance at the Athenaeum. The professional level has always been matched against the European level, where the Philharmonic has always felt at home and where it has always been considered a member of the musical elite. Today, as always, interpreters from all over the world are invited to perform along with the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra. Every week has its guests, and most of the concerts are sold out.

The Philharmonic Orchestra gives full credit to the Romanian Athenaeum as the emblem of the capital of Romania. The splendour of the chromatic palette and historic imagery of the fresco in the Grand Hall is rounded off by the vibrant, homogeneous and expressive ensemble of rich timbres, virtuoso performance and brilliant sonority of the scene. Every performance has a fascination in which the dynamic of the orchestra and the colours of the Grand Hall intertwine always afresh. The performances of the George Enescu Philharmonic there have given to the works by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Enescu and all other major symphonic masters successful and lasting interpretations. These have become landmarks of style in an elegant and modern space.

With all its imposing structure, the narthex of the Athenaeum has never intimidated the spectators or stopped them from sitting on the treads in the Grand Hall when it brims with people listening to their favourite tunes. The performance of the Philharmonic is free, mature, balanced, full of imagination and artistic spirit, while at the same time being professional and lively. This gives a way for the orchestra members to come to the fore. Each solo comes as a replica in miniature of the whole. At the end, the spectators take away the memory of an outstanding performance.

Over time, the George Enescu Philharmonic has had the honour of being conducted by major orchestra maestros. Sergiu Celibidache has become the Honorary Director of the Philharmonic upon his return to Romania, in 1990. Horia Andreescu, one of the best Romanian and world-renowned conductors, has held the position of Associate Conductor for several years. With the opening of Romania's borders, the Bucharest philharmonic has re-entered the international circuit. The names of Sergiu Comissiona, Lawrence Foster and, in recent years, Heinrich Schiff, Seiji Ozawa, David Jimenez Carreras and Maxim Vengerov are only a few of the names which brought back the former magnificence of the Romanian Athenaeum.

The activity of the Philharmonic is just as intense on stage as it is in the recording studio. Along with the almost two hundred annual concerts, the Philharmonic Orchestra has recorded scores of Long Play record albums and compact discs. It is also touring in Europe, Asia and the Far East.

The George Enescu Philharmonic has acquired the merit of setting an example of excellence for the Romanian society.
